Microblading has become an immensely popular solution to sparse or uneven eyebrows. But while it's marketed as a quick fix, most people don’t realise it comes with risks, most worryingly the potential for permanent scarring and skin trauma. As a specialist in medical tattooing, I want to shed light on the dangers of microblading and offer a safer alternative that can provide the desired results without the long-term consequences.
What is Microblading?
Microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup designed to enhance the appearance of eyebrows. Using a manual hand tool, a technician creates hair-like strokes by implanting pigment into the skin with a blade. The appeal lies in the natural look it can provide, as the fine strokes mimic the natural flow of brow hair. It’s a solution that promises fuller, more defined brows for up to a year or more. But this procedure isn't without its risks.
How Microblading Causes Scarring
Because microblading involves cutting into the epidermis, the top layer of the skin, with a handheld blade, it's no surprise that this can lead to deeper cuts than intended.
The skin is literally sliced open and pigment is deposited; but when this is done repeatedly or too forcefully, it can damage the underlying tissue. This trauma leads to scarring, particularly in those who have sensitive skin, who may also may experience more redness and swelling during and after the procedure.
One of the key issues with microblading is the inconsistency in the depth of the blade’s penetration. Too shallow and the pigment fades too quickly; too deep, and you’re left with scarring - as is evident with one of my clients below.
This variation in depth is difficult to control with a manual tool, and when paired with a heavy-handed technique, the risk of damage increases exponentially. As you can see from the above photo of another client above who came to see me post-microblading. The smooth, natural-looking brows she initially hoped had become lumpy, uneven and discoloured. This kind of scar tissue has not only affected her appearance but has also made corrections far more challenging.
The Safer Alternative: Eyebrow Tattooing
Unlike the blade used in microblading, professional eyebrow tattooing employs a machine method that creates hair-like strokes using a fine needle. In expert hands, the process is less invasive and provides more precise control over the depth of pigment application.
With a tattoo machine, the needle deposits pigment into the skin in a way that mimics the look of natural eyebrow hairs without causing trauma to the underlying tissue. The machine can be adjusted to control the depth, ensuring that pigment is applied consistently and safely, therefore significantly reducing the risk of scarring.
Powder and Ombre Brows: Versatile, Long-Lasting Results
In addition to machine hair strokes, eyebrow tattooing offers a range of techniques - such as powder and ombre - which creates different effects. These methods involve softly shading the brow area, giving a more filled-in appearance rather than individual hair strokes. Powder brows give a soft, powdery look, while ombre brows offer a gradient effect, darker at the tail of the brow and lighter at the front.
Both styles are perfect for those looking for a fuller, more defined brow that still appears soft and natural. More importantly, because these techniques mean the risk of skin trauma is significantly reduced.
Avoiding Deep Scarring and Skin Trauma
One of the most significant advantages of professional eyebrow tattooing is its focus on maintaining the integrity of the skin. By using a machine rather than a blade, the risk of over-penetration is minimised and the likelihood of scarring is drastically reduced, even for those with sensitive or thin skin.
Tattooing techniques are also adaptable to various skin types, making it possible to customise the procedure to individual needs. Whether someone has dry, oily or combination skin, machine-method tattooing ensures a safer, more predictable outcome than microblading.
The Expertise Factor
Another critical difference between microblading and tattooing lies in the expertise required. Microblading is often performed after a short training course that may last just a few days. Unfortunately, this limited training doesn’t adequately prepare technicians for handling complications such as excessive bleeding, improper healing or the development of scar tissue.
In contrast, professional tattoo artists undergo much more extensive training. We not only learn how to create precise, artistic brow designs, but also receive in-depth education on skin anatomy, healing and safety protocols. As a medical tattooing expert, my approach is centered on preserving the skin’s health while delivering long-lasting, beautiful results.
Choose Safety First
Of course the promise of perfect brows is appealing, but it's essential to consider the potential risks before choosing microblading. While it may offer short-term beauty, the long-term consequences - permanent scarring, uneven healing and skin trauma - can far outweigh the benefits.
Eyebrow tattooing offers a safer, more reliable alternative that still delivers natural-looking results. Choosing a skilled professional who uses the right tools and techniques will ensure you achieve your desired look without damaging your skin. So before you commit to any semi-permanent eyebrow procedure, always research the practitioner’s qualifications, experience and the method they use. Your skin is precious - treat it with the care it deserves.
